A new undersea cable has brought high-speed internet to a chain of remote islands for the first time, replacing a slow satellite link.
Island schools and clinics will be among the first to be connected. The cable is 1,800 kilometres long and was laid in just over four months.
Local residents interviewed by reporters were cautiously hopeful. Many said they had heard promises before, and would believe the change when they saw it.
International organisations welcomed the news and offered technical help with the next steps.
